The new cholesterol guidelines are out in perfect time to commemorate heart healthy month. The new guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology and 10 other societies have called for a more personalized risk assessment than was outlined in the previous version of 2013.
The new guidelines put out a broader role for screening tests like the coronary artery calcium score for patients when it is unclear whether taking a medicine for cholesterol would help them. And for patients with high risk such as those with diabetes, a much lower target for cholesterol is recommended.
Newer medications that knock off bad cholesterol (LDL) and other medications that are not statins have also been recommended for some patients.
With our excellent cardiologists and nutritionist, in-house laboratory, and latest echocardiography equipment, New York Physicians here in Midtown New York offers the latest in diagnostic and personalized preventive cardiology and precision medicine.
